How to Winterize an Outdoor Fountain
Be sure your outdoor fountains are ready for winter with these simple steps:
Maintaining and caring for outdoor fountains, if you live in a climate of season changes and freezing temperatures, can sound like a lot of work. But by taking these simple steps to winterize your outdoor water fountains can make owning one very simple and virtually maintenance free.
- The absolute best thing you can do is disassemble your fountain and bring it indoors. We understand this is not always an option with large fountains or heavy cast stone fountains so by following these steps you can protect your outdoor fountains all winter.
- Before the first freeze approaches you will want to completely drain your fountain and get any excess water out of all areas of the basins, bowls, tiers, etc. Water that is left in your fountain to freeze could cause cracking.
- Remove the pump. Although fountain pumps are easy to replace, if you can keep it inside during the cold months to avoid damage or cracking it will prolong the life of the pump. Now is also a great time to thoroughly clean your pump to free if of any debris or algae.
- Cover your outdoor fountain! You may find it easier to purchase a fountain cover as it will fit your outdoor fountain better than an old blanket or tarp. Outdoor fountain covers are made specifically for water fountains, they are waterproofed and UV stabilized and they have a wonderful drawstring bottom to fit around your fountain securely. There are many sizes available so you are sure to find one that fits.
- If for some reason covering your fountain isn't an option, take all precaution to use blankets, towels, or burlap to fill the basin's and tiers. You need to place some type of absorbent material in the fountain to avoid moisture in those areas of the fountain.
By following the above tips to winterize your fountain you will find you are extending the life of your outdoor fountain for years to come.
